How To Install Dd Wrt On Linksys E1200 V2 Review

How to install dd wrt on linksys e1200 v2 reviews

While attempting a DD-WRT flash, I screwed up and bricked a Linksys WRT 1900AC router that I'd like to use as networking for competition hardware for middle school robotics tournaments. It can be unbricked, but I have neither the time nor the skills to do so. I'll pay shipping both ways as well as for your time, but I need a solid estimate on what it will cost to repair first. Router was brand new and has never been cracked open. Once 'fixed', it needs the latest install of DD-WRT on it.
Email me at pruckelshaus at gmail.com if you can help
Thanks,
Pete

Head to the DD-WRT database, then type in the exact model number of your router. This database will tell you your router is one of four things: Supported, which means you can install DD-WRT. Read through it, looking for which build(s) to use with it and whether there are any gotchas (such as, builds over a certain size bricking the router). I will also check for any threads regarding the router on the DD-WRT forums. If no 'install guide' link is present, search the DD-WRT Wiki and forums for the router, usually using Google. The router and dd-wrt install has nothing to do with 'HMA-HideMyAss' VPN service. The version of DD-WRT is stripped-down and old (the unit I received, YMMV). Other VPN service vendors, such as Overplay.net provide add-in software that integrates DD-WRT with their service. Something worth researching if you're. I have a E1200 V2 that is currently running in client bridge mode using DD-WRT v24-sp2 (05/27/13) - SVN 21676. I installed this firmware a few years back and everything seems to have been working fine (the router gives network access to my Yamaha receiver).
I'd like to switch from client bridge to repeater bridge to improve wifi signal strength on first floor of house however I stupidly did not save the account/password that I used when configuring the router initially. So it seems that the only way to get repeater bridge working is to reset the router. I'm assuming that I should perhaps take this opportunity to update to a newer build?.
Per the post below I'm thinking that build 33986 (dd-wrt.v24-33986_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-nv64k.bin) would be reasonable to install on the router. For clarity, I understand the update process to be:
1) Remove computer from wireless/internet and connect to the E1200 using an ethernet cable.
2) Perform 30/30/30 reset of the router and allow time for the router to reboot.
3) Login to router and flash 33986 firmware from the webgui update page. Wait at least 3 mins (maybe 5 or more!).
4) Power cycle the router and wait for lights to settle (maybe 2 or 3 mins).
5) Perform hard (30/30/30) reset, login and proceed to configure the router for repeater bridge.
Is this a good build to use with the E1200 and do I have the correct understanding of the procedure to be followed?

Based on jpp's comment, I decided to put this same build (dd-wrt.v24-33986_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-nv64k.bin) on my Cisco/Linksys E1200 v2 as my very first foray into DD-WRT. I followed the Flashing Instructions including the Current Editor's Note, which took me from the Linksys firmware it came with to DD-WRT build 33555 mega, and then I flashed to 33986 from there.
On my fairly vanilla configuration I have 2 full days of uptime, 16,000MB of ingress, and 800MB of egress behind me. I'm using the default settings aside from changing the root password, renaming the SSID, enabling WPA2 Personal wireless security, and pointing DNS at DNS.WATCH's resolvers. An hour ago I also enabled the OpenVPN client, and it has been solid aside from the significantly reduced ingress capability of about 3Mbps (which at a glance appears to be bottlenecked at the router CPU, although I have not yet attempted to diagnose and could be a result of many factors external to the router).
The only two issues I have observed are trivial:
1. After applying Restore Factory Defaults, it is necessary to power cycle the router in order to bring it back to life. During the process of flashing from the original Linksys firmware to DD-WRT, I also observed this behavior on at least one of the older builds along the way. I've seen it mentioned in this Forum several times, so it is a known nuance.
2. Enabling HTTPS web access to the DD-WRT Control Panel does not appear to work. I'm not exposing the Control Panel to the outside, so https is not absolutely necessary for me, this is just something I noticed.
I am just writing this to share my experience with DD-WRT 33986 on the Linksys E1200 v2 router, and to thank jpp for sharing his experience with this build - I am not writing to ask for help at this time. I wanted to try configuring OpenVPN on a router current enough to have vulnerabilities like KRACK addressed, which lead me to DD-WRT. Perhaps the above will be useful to someone with similar thoughts.
